Mazda are all set to unveil the nimblest and mightiest MX-5 racing car ever created at the Britcar MSA British Endurance Championship this year. The old-style MX-5 has been given a complete makeover to ensure that it is fully compliant with FIA regulations.
The super vehicle comes complete with a tuned version of Mazda’s 2.0 litre in-line four, and generates 275bhp. This represents a significant power boost to the engine of the road going model.
Performance motoring enthusiasts will be looking forward to seeing the Japanese motor zoom from 0-96km/h in three seconds flat and reach a top speed of 256km/h when it competes in the high profile Britcar event.
Greame Fudge, Public Relations Director for Mazda UK, said, ‘The MX-5 production race car’s modest power output, bullet proof reliability and nimble handling demonstrated last year how the MX-5 can be competitive against some of the purpose-built Lotus, VW and BMW race cars.’
The expert Mazda and Jota Sport teams spent long hours thinking about the best ways of reducing the weight of their brand new vehicle. Indeed they worked for more than 400 hours on creating a shell which was far stronger than that demanded by FIA.
The manufacturers conquered a number of stiff engineering challenges during the production phase, including adjusting the suspension and installing the six speed sequential gearbox. They also carried
out weight reducing tasks, such as stripping the vehicle’s interior and dipping the shell in acid.
This year the challenge of beating the awesome Aston Martin Vantage GT4 and the unbelievably rapid Porsche 911 GT3 RSR will await two of Mazda works finest motorists, Mark Ticehurst and Owen Mildenhall.
Mr Fudge’s optimism over the Mazda’s chances was made apparent when he said, ‘with a higher power output combined with the durability, reliability and handling attributes that the MX-5 is renowned for, the MX-5 GT race car will be strong contender [sic] against the more powerful race cars in its class.’
Racing fans from around the world will have the opportunity to see the big name vehicles go head to head during nine events, including one at the magnificent Francorchamps track in Belgium. The combined noise of the roaring
and cheering motor-sports followers should be truly awe inspiring.
