Mercedes-Benz offers its cars in Germany with the option of deleting the trunk badges so the neighbors don’t know if you have a diesel or a V-12. Add some snazzy wheels and chrome exhaust tips, and they’ll likely assume the latter.

SLP offers a similar service for Camaro V-6 buyers. For an extra $849, option code Y3B gets you SLP’s RS package, which includes the Z28′s dual mail-slot exhaust and nifty black "heritage" stripes down the center line. The RS badges SLP adds to the fenders and dash might be a giveaway, but only to the sharpest eyes. Another $699 buys five-spoke 8-by-16-inch alloy wheels to complete the picture for something around $20,000, depending on the transmission and other options selected. SLP makes a range of suspension upgrades, for example.

The exhaust change dubs real snarl into the 3.8-liter V-6′s song and adds five horsepower, claims SLP, bringing the total to 205. Our test car with an automatic managed to cruise the quarter in 15.8 seconds at 86 mph — more than a second quicker than Burt’s original Bandit Trans Am V-8. These days, that kind of power increase won’t make you invulnerable on the avenue, but the looks and extra decibels might mean you never have to show it.

Renault has announced that the Twizy, its wacky electric quadricycle, will go on sale in the UK for just f6,690 next year.

Aimed strictly at urban commuters, the Twizy is a curious mix of city car and scooter that seats two occupants in a tandem configuration.

Powered by a 17hp electric motor, the new Renault has a range of 62 miles and fully recharges in three and a half hours from a domestic mains supply.

The Twizy will be available in two trim levels: Urban and Technic. Urban is the entry-level version, while the higher spec Technic will cost f7,400.

On top of that Renault will charge you f40 a month to lease the battery on a 36 month, 4,500 mile a year agreement. This extra cost might seem an irritating extra, but thanks to Renault retaining ownership of the battery it means it will replace it if anything goes wrong and it has even said it will replace it when it inevitably starts to lose power towards the end of its life.

There may be the option to buy the whole unit in the future, but no details have been announced on this just yet.

Customers can reserve their Twizy on www.renault-ze.com with a deposit of just f20 and will take delivery early next year.

Certified Pre-Owned: 2004 - 2008 Audi S4 - Feature - Auto Reviews - Car and Driver

Challenge your average gearhead to come up with the name of a car that has rally-racing heritage, all-wheel drive, and something near 300 horsepower, and you’ll probably get an answer that includes the words “Mitsubishi” or “Subaru.” But the

, the performance variant of the A4 line, fits that criteria, too, and its 340-hp V-8 offers far more grunt than the turbo fours from Japan. The S4’s athleticism impressed us enough to rank it higher than an E46 BMW M3 in a May 2003 comparison test.

The third-generation S4 arrived in the U.S. for the 2004 model year in sedan, wagon (Avant), and convertible (cabriolet) versions, all with the aforementioned 340 horsepower—and 302 pound-feet of torque—from a 4.2-liter, DOHC 40-valve V-8. In late 2005, the entire A4 lineup received styling tweaks, but the S4 was left relatively unchanged. Only the convertible was offered as a 2009; the other versions were phased out in anticipation of the new 2010 model.

A curb weight north of 3800 pounds resulted in a 0-to-60 time of about five seconds flat for the sedan, so the S4 wasn’t winning all the footraces with its competitors. But if your must-have list includes all-weather capability, a deep V-8 rumble, and comfort for four, the S4 stands alone.

Audi’s certified pre-owned (CPO) program lets you buy an S4 with a new-car warranty at a used-car price. Audi won’t say how much its CPO program adds to a used car’s sticker, but a quick look at online classified ads shows that dealer asking prices for S4s seem to be in line with those of many private sellers.

Used Audis that are candidates for CPO sale automatically go through a long qualifying checklist when they get turned in at the dealer. At the top are several tests the car must pass without exception: It must have a clean CarFax report; few service stops other than for regular maintenance; zero aftermarket modifications; and matching original VINs on the frame, windshield, and B-pillar.

The cars must be no older than five model years and have fewer than 60,000 miles on them. A new Audi comes with a four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty. Audi’s CPO program adds two years and 50,000 miles to the original warranty, for a maximum of six years/100,000 miles. The only catch is that warranty claims have an $85 deductible for each service visit, although that fee is the same regardless of the number of fixes sought.

The S4 is a low-volume model, so it’s understandably rare in the used market. At press time, a nationwide search of

raised just 39 CPO S4s. Model details are limited to body style, transmission, and exterior and interior colors, which are often omitted. Further information about specific options such as navigation, heated seats, and satellite radio requires a close look at the displayed photographs or a call to the dealer.

In its first year, 2004, a new S4 started at just under $50,000; by 2008, the sedan and wagon were going for just over that amount, with the convertible commanding about $9000 more. But if you stay away from the more recent 2008s, you can get an S4 for less than $40,000, right in line with the price of a new

or . The Audi offers similar thrills, with luxury-car cachet that the boy-racer Japanese models can’t match.
